History

In the 50's it was still a village with a few holiday shacks. Today Jeffrey's Bay, also known as J-Bay, is one of the fastest growing towns in South Africa and becoming very popular amongst foreigners from all over the world because of its fine weather; beautiful setting; surroundings and good value for money in real estate.

The average temperature in Jeffrey's Bay with its moderately temperate climate is 22 degree Celsius (71.6F). A better climate than Mediterranean because the winters are warmer, better than subtropical because its less humid.

The "moderately temperate" is very similar to the Mediterranean climate with the exception that our winters are not as cold and wet. Our climate is more moderate and the rainfall is more evenly spread between winter and summer.

We have all vegetation types in the world excluding desert and rain forest in the area. Here we have more than the big five of Africa we also have whales, dolphins and no malaria. Come and experience European luxury in African comfort. You will not look back.

Attractions

Jeffrey's Bay is surrounded by a number of geographical; climatic and vegetation variants namely forests, fynbos, valley bushveld, semi-arid Karoo.

30 Minutes to the southwest is the forests of Tsitsikamma with rainfall of 2500mm annually, this is also one of the biggest dairy farm areas in South Africa. Adjacent to this, separated by a mountain range, lies one of the biggest deciduous fruit producing areas in the country - called the Langkloof where the mountain peaks are occasionally covered with snow in the winter.

30 Minutes north west lies the Gamtoos Valley one of the biggest citrus producing areas in the country.

In the same area is the Wilderness and mountainous terrain known as Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve is a nature lover's dream.

40 Minutes north east lies the semi-arid Karoo region known for its sheep; goats and angoras. Game farms is becoming a very big industry in this area, hunters from all over the world come here for their trophy hunting.

Mozambique sea current - People who want to fish in the warm current for Marlin and other tropical fish, can travel 60-80 km into the deep-sea to fish in the warm Mozambique current.

There are various nature reserves; game reserves and coastal parks as well.

Sightseeing - never a dull moment for property owners and visitors

All these various activities makes this town ideal as a base for travelling; sightseeing; hiking and a multitude of activities from deep sea fishing; scuba diving; fishing; shell collecting; kite surfing; sand boarding; surfing; horse riding; bird watching; cycling; 4 x 4 trails; game watching & hunting.

Ocean

The ocean presents beautiful marine life with an abundance of dolphins and regular visits from the whales.

During the 60s it was discovered that J-Bay has one of the finest right-hand point breaking waves in the world. Today this surfing spot is known as Supertubes. Annually, surfers from all over the world migrate to enjoy the winter swell. This is one of the stops on the Professional Surfers Tour.

African Dawn

The Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary & Rehabilitation Centre is a mere 28 kilometers from town. African Dawn offers many bird species & monkeys, crocodiles, bucks, etc. It also has a Restaurant, Bar & function area, Picnic & braai facilities, Hiking trails, Game drives, and Bush camp accommodation.

Getting there

Drive on the N2 towards Port Elizabeth, cross the Gamtoos river and bridge, at the first turn-off after the bridge, you will find the official sign of African Dawn. From here just follow the signs.

Shell Museum

Jeffrey's Bay is world renowned for its beautiful shells. They have more than 600 shells from species all of the world which makes it one of the largest collections in South Africa.

The Shell Museum is open Monday to Friday from 08h00 to 17h00, Saturday and Public holidays from 09h00 to 13h00.

Don’t miss the annual Shell Festival held in September each year.

Dolphin Beach Entertainment

Come slide, come ride, come bold, come old! A popular spot for wet and wild fun: waterslide, mini golf and quad bikes. Located in Diaz road, Main Beach.
